Ed Oliver appointed as Chairman of CH1ChesterBID

 

A new Chairman has been appointed to lead Chester’s Business Improvement District (BID) and to support the continued drive for a more vibrant and successful city centre.

Following an extensive recruitment exercise and interviews with a number of potential candidates, the CH1ChesterBID Board named Ed Oliver Chairman of CH1ChesterBID during a meeting of the Executive Board on Friday 1st May 2015.

Oliver takes to the helm of the city’s BID Board following a distinguished career in retail and business. Having spent 28 years in management roles with Marks and Spencer and running Clayton Square shopping centre Oliver will bring knowledge, expertise and understanding of city centre operations to CH1. As well as his retail background, Oliver’s previously held roles include Chairman of Liverpool Chamber of Commerce, Vice Chairman of the Prince's Trust Merseyside, Chairman of the Liverpool BID Company and Non-Executive Director at Alder Hey Children's Hospital.

Oliver’s other current roles include Chairman of the Ronald McDonald Family House Trust, Alder Hey, which provides accommodation for 84 families of sick children at the hospital, and Non-Executive Director at The Countess of Chester NHS Foundation Trust Hospital.

Speaking today, Ed Oliver said: “I’m delighted to be joining CH1ChesterBID and I hope I can make an important contribution to its ongoing success. The team has achieved a tremendous amount in a short space of time and I’m looking forward to building on that progress with the support of our members.

“We have a plan in place that will deliver a positive, profitable and sustainable future for Chester City centre, and I’m confident that we can achieve it – even exceed it – but we’ll only do that by working closely with each of the 509 businesses in the BID area.

“We’ll continue to deliver on our key pledges, including more quality events, a better welcome for city visitors, improved marketing and cost savings for our members, all of which are designed to improve their bottom lines and drive more footfall into the city centre.

“The backing for a Business Improvement District here in Chester was overwhelming and my job is to ensure we can maintain that support and retain strong levels of engagement for the rest of the BID term. I’m confident that, by working together, we can deliver meaningful change for everyone.”

CH1ChesterBID started work in September 2014 following a successful ballot involving all of the businesses within the BID area.

The full BID term will run for five years until September 2019, over which time approximately £2.5m of private sector funds will be invested directly into city centre improvements.

Eryl Edwards, Vice-Chairman of CH1ChesterBID, added: “Ed is an absolutely fantastic appointment for CH1ChesterBID, for its members and for the wider city. His wealth of experience, knowledge and pedigree will be a true asset to the city centre. Last September we embarked on an ambitious plan to deliver a better future for our city centre and we remain as committed to that as ever.

“We’re delighted with the progress we’ve made so far but we’ve only just begun – with Ed’s support and know-how, we have the people in place to truly put Chester city centre back to where it belongs as the retail, business and leisure destination of choice.”
